Our Savtrans Berlin garage has received the order to replace the timing chain on a Volkswagen Polo, 1.2 petrol engine, year of construction 2009, with a mileage of 150,000 km.
The timing chain was not replaced because it was necessary according to the maintenance regulations, but because an ESP error message (vehicle dynamics control) came on. The vehicle was losing traction, fuel consumption was increasing and engine vibrations were occurring. This error message indicates possible problems with the sensor, faults in the control unit or wear on the brake components.

Diagnosis
The computer-aided diagnosis revealed the following:
- Crankshaft and camshaft are no longer synchronised.
This means that the timing chain is overstretched, which can lead to serious engine damage.
Workflow
Our mechanic Nikolai began by dismantling all the attachments that were blocking access to the timing chain. When the cover covering the chain was removed, he realised that the chain tensioner (shoe) was broken, which had caused the camshaft to shift by 15 degrees. We ordered a new chain, all the seating surfaces were cleaned and reassembled in reverse order with the utmost precision.
Once all the mechanical work had been completed, we reconnected the computer, carried out a diagnosis and calibration, and the customer received his vehicle back in perfect condition.
