In the Savtrans Berlin garage a customer arrived with a Volkswagen Polo, 1.2, year of manufacture 2009 to us, who had already been Timing belt change was with us. But now there was another problem: the tensioning pulley of the alternator was causing a humming noise. We also came across an unusual situation.

Diagnosis: Defective tensioner pulley on VW Polo
During the diagnosis, our mechanic Nikolai established the following:
- The tensioning pulley of the alternator was defective
- Lateral damage to the alternator belt
When the alternator belt was removed, it could be seen that it had only recently been replaced and showed only minimal wear. However, as the bearing of the pulley was defective, the belt began to slip and tear at the side.
Tensioner repair procedure in our Berlin workshop
- The vehicle was driven onto the inspection platform
- The battery was disconnected
- The alternator belt is removed using a special tool
- The tensioning pulley screws are loosened
- A new tensioning pulley is fitted, taking into account the correct tension
- The new alternator belt is fitted according to the instructions
The entire work process takes up to two hours.

We can all see this time and time again. If defects are not rectified at the first sign of a fault, they have more serious consequences, resulting in a financial burden.
