A 2009 Mazda 5 was brought to our Savtrans car workshop in Berlin. The driver complained of a significant loss of engine power and a permanently illuminated check engine light on the dashboard. After a thorough diagnosis, the cause was clear: a defective intake manifold with worn seals and a faulty flap. In this post, we will explain how such a repair is carried out and how to recognise a defective intake manifold.
What does the intake manifold do – and why is it so important?
The intake manifold (also known as the inlet manifold) is a core component of the engine. It distributes the intake air evenly to all cylinders, thus ensuring an efficient combustion process. If the intake manifold leaks or is defective, this balance is disturbed – with noticeable consequences for performance, fuel consumption, and engine running.
Defective intake manifold: these symptoms you should know.
A faulty or leaking intake manifold often manifests itself through the following signs:
- Loss of engine power – the vehicle has poor acceleration, is sluggish on the throttle pedal
- Check Engine light is on – The control unit reports an error in the air system
- Increased fuel consumption – the engine works less efficiently due to an incorrect air-fuel mixture
- Uneven engine running / Jerking at idle – uneven air distribution disrupts combustion
- Hissing noises from the engine – an indication of an air leak in the intake area
Check Engine light on a Mazda 5 – how the diagnosis works
Once the vehicle had arrived with us, we performed the following diagnostic steps:
- Reading fault codes with the diagnostic scanner – the scanner indicated an error in the air circuit
- Visual inspection of the engine bay for visible damage or leaks
- Targeted air leak test – the worn intake manifold gaskets were identified
- Checking the intake flaps – one flap was defective and was blocking the even distribution of air

Changing the intake manifold on a Mazda 5 – how the repair works
Our master, Dmitri, took on the repair carefully and step by step. Since the intake manifold on the Mazda 5 is difficult to access, a flexible video camera was even used to safely loosen all screws and connections.
- Remove all cables, hoses, and connectors around the intake manifold
- Careful removal of the defective intake manifold
- Installation of a new intake manifold with high-quality replacement gaskets
- Connecting the diagnostic scanner and calibrating the system
- Test drive to check engine performance and fault-free operation
