The customer has arrived! Oh no, no, he was brought to our place with our tow truck. Savtrans Berlin garage brought in, with no signs of life whatsoever. The customer himself had no idea what could have happened, that his Mercedes-Benz V-Class, 2.0, 2019 had broken down and the engine wouldn't start.

Reading CAN bus errors – how the diagnosis works
- We performed a visual inspection in the engine bay and interior.
- We connected the diagnostic equipment
- We tested the entire system
- We have detected an error in the CAN bus system.
During the diagnosis, our auto electrician discovered that there had been a cable break in the CAN bus system.
What is a CAN bus?
This is a digital communication network that is installed in newer vehicle models for data exchange between the electronic control units (ECUs). The CAN bus system is responsible for the operation of the control unit, air conditioning, ABS, airbags, and the multimedia system.
CAN bus errors: typical symptoms
How can you tell that the CAN bus is the problem? Typically, several systems fail simultaneously – not just one. With our client, it was the engine that would no longer start. Frequent symptoms include:
The engine won't start
ABS, ESP or Airbag warning light is on
The air conditioning is no longer responding.
Speedometer or instrument cluster fails
Multimedia system not starting
Possible causes of a CAN bus failure
A CAN bus failure can have various causes:
Cable break in the wiring harness (as in our case)
Moisture or corrosion in connectors
Marten damage in the engine compartment
Faulty control unit blocking the bus
Undervoltage due to a weak battery
